6 Things I Would Tell Myself When I First Began Blogging

1. Engage with other bloggers:

More and more, I am realizing the importance of interacting with other bloggers in order to grow my audience. Engaging with other bloggers is fun! I always learn something new. Plus, it does come in handy to have blogging relationships as they often give great feedback and provide opportunities such as guest blogging!

2. Be Yourself:

A bit cliche but true. Writing is an expression of oneself and there is only one of you. With WordPress, many people use there blogs as a diary but even if you don’t, there is only one you! What you write about is important but the delivery and tone is just as important!

Be yourself. No one can write your experiences quite like you can.

3. Always Experiment:

This year has been full of new experiences for us all. While doing new things is scary, it will most likely teach you more about yourself and you may be able to see that what you can do is not as limited as you think.

So, try that new topic. Play with the format and schedule of your posts. You may learn something.

4. Be Willing to Learn

There is always something learn. Blogging is one of those things where you get out of it what you put into it. So, read a book, take a course or read an article. There is always something you can learn!

On the flip side, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Remember why you started writing and the little knowledge and confidence you had when you first began. Whenever you find yourself in a lull, take a break. Come back. Create little goals for yourself and stick to them. Start with writing one word, reading one article, or watching one video.

5. Believe in Yourself:

The amount of belief that you have in yourself will most likely show up in your writing.  When I first began blogging, I felt unqualified to give tutorials or tips to anyone, even if it is a topic that I have intimate knowledge of. I was always afraid of contradicting what someone else was saying while discounting my own experience.

These days, I speak on what I have knowledge of (given the information I have at that time) and worry less about how others will disagree with it. If I don’t know it, then I don’t say it or I ask for information. This has been extremely beneficial as added knowledge gives me more confidence to speak or teach that information.

So, believe in yourself and your abilities and others will be able to appreciate what you share!

6. The Way You Write Will Change

Coming back from a two year blogging break, I have noticed that my writing voice has changed. In fact, it has matured. Change is good and progress is great. Become comfortable with your evolution and adjust as necessary. Maybe you need to revise old posts or take them down all together- don’t be afraid to do this. As you grow, so will your writing so don’t be afraid to change your style.

What things would you tell yourself, if you could rewind time? Leave them in the comments, below.
